Volume 1: Bajan Sunday Lunch (2025)
Sunday Lunch is a still life series documenting the preparation of rice and peas and flying fish, a Sunday staple in Bajan homes, and a dish that carries everything: culture, family, and the feeling of home. I cooked this meal and photographed it at the same time, not as a subject at arm’s length, but as an extension of myself. The kitchen as archive. The recipe as inheritance. This is not food photography. This is memory and tradition.
This series is the first volume of Sunday Lunch, an ongoing documentary project on how Caribbean food culture persists, changes and carries identity across the diaspora in New York. It begins in a Bajan kitchen and opens outward: to elders who cook from memory with no recipe written down, the farmers cultivating the land and providing the ingredients, to the restaurants and bakeries that keep dishes alive for people far from the islands, and to the young people learning, or not learning, to cook the food they grew up on. Each new chapter will pair the table with the cook’s own story.
The project is ongoing. Two images from this series, Dusted and Sunday Lunch, were selected for Commune at The Hue Gallery, Hartford, 2026.
